3D Projecting Form

This week in our art class we were creating 3D sculptures from books, which if weren't used would have been thrown out.  However, there was a twist.  Our sculpture had to be based on what our book was about; for example my book was about ancient Egypt and "Tutankhamun and the valley of the kings", so I made a 3D pyramid and an Egyptian 'mummy'.

Here are some artists' work that my work links to:

I haven't yet found out the name of the artist of this 3D sculpture, but I think that the book is 'Alice in wonderland', and a table has been made, similar to the one on the opposite page.  This links to our sculptures because you can see that the sculpture on this book was based on the picture on the opposite page.

This piece is called 'Billy Goat the Counsellor', by Sachiyo Yoshida.
Unfortunately I obviously cant't tell what this book is about, but you can see that it is 3D, and popping up, out of the book

First of all, I received a book, called 'Tutankhamun and the Valley of the Kings'.  Then I brainstormed some ideas, such as: Pyramids, Tutankhamun in a tomb and Egyptian warriors.  I decided to settle on a pyramid and and Egyptian warrior.

First, I  found the middle of the book where I would create my sculpture.  Then I ripped some pages, which had a lot of text on them, from the front and back.  Then I started on the pyramid.  I got a sheet of newspaper, and folded it continuously in half until it was about  8cm x 8cm, then i got another sheet of newspaper and folded that one until it was about 6cm x 6cm and placed it on top of my first square.  Finally, I got a final piece of newspaper and folded it down until it was about 4cm x 4cm, and place that on the top.  Then I started on my Egyptian warrior.  But I realized it wasn't sure how I would go about making it, so I changed my decision and made Tutankhamun in a tomb instead.

To make the Tutankhamun, I firstly made a basic structure from newspaper, by a tube for the legs, a cone  (with the wider part at the shoulders) for the upper body and arms and a ball of newspaper for the head.  Then I built a wall around it as a coffin, but leaving the top open so it was see-able.

Here are some pictures of my work in the making:

Once I had finished the basic structure I began to layer the sculpture with the pages that I ripped out of the book earlier, which made it blend in with the book.  One I had covered all over, with no newspaper showing through, I was finished.

Here are some pictures of my finished piece:

My piece was a success, and I was surprised at how securely the  models had been stuck to the page.  I did have half of one page empty, which I could have tried to fill with something else, maybe attempt an Egyptian warrior.  I also found that I had a few tight gaps which I had to fit pieces of pages in, and that wasn't done perfectly.

  1. Great start well done, can't wait to see your images please make sure they are uploaded by next lesson 14/10/10.

To develop your annotation reflect on what you think of your final outcome, connections to artists work and improvements you could make.
